The Bettendorf Community Schools Foundation and Pleasant Valley Educational Foundation are joining together to continue the tradition of the annual Labor Day Race – Run with Carl.
“We are so pleased that the race will continue to bring families together to support PV and Bettendorf students,” said Dick Schillig. “It has always been our hope that this race would spark a love of running in young children and become a family tradition for others like it was for us.
The event was established in 1995 in memory of Carl Schillig, a Pleasant Valley High School student who died at the age of 15 in a car-pedestrian accident in September of 1994. Over the years proceeds raised from the event funded the Carl D. Schillig Memorial Fund providing college scholarships to graduates of Pleasant Valley and Bettendorf high schools.
“The Bettendorf Community Schools Foundation and Pleasant Valley Educational Foundation are excited to come together to continue what has become a legendary event commemorating the life of Carl Schillig,” Ami Wells, Executive Director, Bettendorf Community Schools Foundation. “We are also thrilled to continue providing scholarships and other educational opportunities to the student in our communities.”
The Schillig family announced that annual event would end this year with the 20th running of the Run with Carl in September 2014. The decision spurred the Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley school foundations to work together on a plan to continue the legacy.

Mission of PVSEF

The Run with Carl was the primary funding vehicle for The Carl D. Schillig Memorial Fund. The fund was established in 1995 in memory of Carl Schillig who was killed at the age of 15 in a car-pedestrian accident. With Carl’s philanthropy as its inspiration, the nonprofit also distributes proceeds from the run to organizations in which Carl was active, including the Bettendorf Pleasant Valley Aquatics, the Cornbelt Running Club, and Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
Carl D. Schillig Memorial Fund Scholarships are awarded to a student with a minimum 2.3+ grade point average who exemplifies Carl’s spirit through participation in school, sports and community and church activities. Each recipient receives a $4,000 scholarship over 4 years, contingent on satisfactory performance. This year, the 29th and 30th scholarships were awarded. The Carl D. Schillig Memorial Scholarship will continue to support scholarships for students at Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley High Schools.
